HISTORY INFLUENCES MODERN BOW HUNTING

What is inspiration for me? The Wiawis PT-X is a project inspired by the historical archery innovations of Korea.
This project does not reinvent or improve the practice, but rather introduces a new historical alternative.

REDEFINING THE BOW HUNTING EXPERIENCE BY MODERNIZING AND INTEGRATING HISTORIC KOREAN INNOVATIONS

WHY?

TO SHOW THAT INSPIRATION ISN’T CONFINED TO THE PRESENT.  ANYTHING, NO MATTER HOW OLD OR OVERLOOKED, CAN BECOME THE FOUNDATION FOR SOMETHING ENTIRELY NEW.

THE HISTORICAL INSPIRATION

PYEONJEON (SHORT ARROW)
The pyeonjeon (편전)  is a short arrow used during the 1918 for its faster speed and effectiveness than traditional long arrows.

TONGAH (CHAMBER)
Due to its size, it requires a device called a tongah (통아)—a bamboo chamber. This setup allows the archer to draw the bow fully while shooting the shorter arrow.

IDENTIFYING THE PROS AND CONS

STRENGTHS

  • A shorter arrow travels a faster speed compared to a traditional arrow.
  • The short arrow can fully pierce through the target due to its increased speed and velocity.
  • The small bow, arrows, and quiver allow for quick mobility.

WEAKNESSES

  • A shorter arrow travels a shorter distance compared to a traditional arrow.
  • Must use an advanced technique called overdrawing: drawing the bow past the face rather than to the eye, to generate more tension and compensate for the shorter distance.

THE GOAL
APPLY THESE INNOVATIONS & COMPENSATE FOR THE WEAKNESSES THROUGH MODERN TECH

REVERSE DRAW
A reverse draw is a type of orientation that flips the traditional bow orientation.
Most commonly seen within crossbows to also help compensate for the distance with their shorter arrows.

HOW IT WORKS

SET UP + LOAD
Load the arrow through the front stabilizer and clip the arrow knock to the string. Clip the release aid onto the string through the side slit opening of the chamber.

ANCHOR + EXPAND
With your non-dominant hand, grip the angled grip located at the side of the chamber. Use the release aid to pull back the string, applying tension and force.
RELEASE + LEVEL
When pulling to the max draw length of 18”, press the trigger found on the release aid to release the string. This 3-step process shows how the bow is meant to be fired.

THE MODERN TONGAH (CHAMBER)
The modern tongah (chamber) cohesively integrates within the main riser, acting as a guide for the short arrow.
The Tongah features a front stabilizer for release tension, with a side slot that allows for the release aid to clip onto the string

THE MODERN PYEONJEON (SHORT ARROW)
The new pyeonjeon features a carbon fiber rod with a three-spoke aerodynamic tip.
The new materials and architecture allow for lighter weight and faster speeds.
